What would be the best type of metal detector to begin with on how to learn about detecting and the lest expensive?

It all depends on a few factors. I have found the bet simple machines that give you good performance with cost effectiveness are Garrett and Tesoro. Garrett Ace series and Tesoro Cibola really are good machines. They turn on and go machines with few bells and whistles.

There are various places.
Remember to ask permission always.
Never metal detect on federally protected land.
Check with local authority to your area as to comunity laws regarding detecting.
